From Representative Men and Old Families
"Ichabod Potter, son of Nathanial, married Martha Hazard, daughter of Thomas and Martha, and was of Portsmouth, R.I. Their children were: Thomas, John, Robert,Ichabod. Ichabod Potter Sr. Died in 1676. He signed articles relative to Westerly lands in 1661. His widow removed from Portsmouth to Kingston."
One source says that Ichabod is the son of Robert Potter, the other Potter signer of the Rhode Island Compact. A Genealogy of the Potter Family Originating in Rhode Island
A handwritten document of unknown origin that is passed down from generation to generation in the Potter family tells the story that Ichabod was actually Martin Potter from England the son of Vincent Potter, one of the men who signed the death warrent of Charles I. After Vincent was arrested, Martin leased out their property (for 99 years), changed his name to Ichabod and fled to the colonies. This is a pretty interesting story and the timeline works somewhat because Ichabod married in 1661 in Portsmouth and Vincent was arrested in 1660. However, there does not seem to be a record of Vincent Potter having children, nor substantial property. Vincent Potter had fairly strong ties to Boston and had spent about 4 years in Massachusetts as a young man.
