Thomas Potter, of South Kingstown, born Portsmouth about
23 June 1728; married 20 Jan. 1668, Susanna Tripp. His will was dated 3
June 1727 and proved in 1728. Inventory 4,092 pounds, 8 shillings, 7
pence. Included in the inventory were books, sliver money, livestock,
as "negroes, Harry, 20 pounds, Scipio, 45 pounds, Simon, 85 pounds,
Pero, 55 pounds, apprentice and an Indian boy, 16 pounds. [Will on page
27.] His second wife, Lydia (Wilcox) Sherman, was the daughter of D.
and Elizabeth (Cook) Wilcox.
Thomas Potter, born Portsmouth, RI, about 1663; died before 11
June 1728 when his will was entered for probate. Married Susannah
Tripp, and it
is possible Thomas and Susannah were second cousins. Thomas married (2)
Mrs.Lydia (Wilcox) Sherman 20 Dec. 1720. About 1692 Thomas moved to
he remained. He was on a list of SK freemen dated 16 Sept. 1723,
incorporating an earlier list dated 1696. Kingston land records reveal
Thomas signed deeds with a mark, reproduced as a very heavily inked
"T". He may have followed a fairly common practice of imitating the
English custom of adopting a seal for signing documents. The inventory
of his estate shows an item "books," so perhaps
he was not Illiterate.
