Muriel was educated in Bar Harbor schools. She graduated nursing school at Maine General Hospital in Portland, 1935. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor. Muriel helped start the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance Service. She nursed in Portland, Palm Beach, Fla., Gadsden. Ala., and at Bar Harbor Hospital. She was on duty at Bar Harbor Hospital at the time of the Great Fire in 1947. Muriel moved to Southwest Harbor in 1950 to become town nurse and school nurse. She remained school nurse until school moved to MDI High School and she remained town nurse until her retirement in 1993.
Muriel is survived by her son, Edward of Manset; her daughter, Emily, granddaughter, Tina, great-granddaughter, Jackie and a grandson, Larry, all of Florida; many nieces, nephews, 10 great-grandnephews, 16 great-grandnieces and many special friends. Muriel was predeceased by her father, Arthur MacQuinn Sr., and her mother, Tillie, of Bar Harbor; her husband, Dudley, of Manset; two brothers, Arthur MacQuinn Jr. and Harold MacQuinn of Bar Harbor; five sisters, Madeline Leland, Phoebe Driscoll, both of Florida, Tillie Allen of Massachusetts, Evelyn Grotta and Marguerite Gilley, both of Connecticut; two nieces, Ruthy MacQuinn of Bar Harbor and Gloria Grotta of California; and a nephew, Douglas MacQuinn of Bar Harbor.
Friends are invited to call 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Southwest Harbor, with the Rev. Ann Kidder officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Muriel’s memory to St. John’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 767, Southwest Harbor or to Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 437, Southwest Harbor 04679.
