42. Benjamin Cweig was born in Poland abt 1838. He moved to England before 1865 and to the U.S. between 1871 and 1876. He likely died just before 1900.
Yay. I have tracked Benjamin to England. According to the 1871 British Census, in 1871 he was in Battersea, England with his wife Ann C. They had a son Louis (6), and daughter Eleanor (5), a son Henry (3), and a daughter Madelina (3mos.). He was an Assistant hairdresser and was born in Poland. She was born in Middlesex Camden. He was 33 and Ann was 29.
They lived at 49 Lockington Rd, which appears to be an apartment, because 2 other families are also at 49 Lockington. That makes sense, as Battersea is in London.
So it appears that sometime between 1871 (age 33) and 1874 (age 36) (When son Henry got U.S. Citizenship) he emigrated with his family to the U.S.
According to Pauline's 1900 and 1930 census document, he was born in Germany, interesting.
I found a record for the death of Joseph Louis Cweig in Islington in 1863. They were not married yet, so that might be his father or brother. They named their first son Louis, as if in remembrance.
Benjamin is listed in many directories in the city of Boston, Massachusetts.
W.A. Greenough & Co's Directory of the Inhabitants, Institutions, Manufacturing Establishments, Societies, Business, Business Firms, Etc., Etc, in the City of Malden, to which is Added a Directory of Everett
Published 1882 (link) , he occupations is given as hairdresser, and his address:
Everett Square, house Harvard, near Waverly.
He is listed in the Boston, Massachusettes Directory in 1890 as living at 267 W. Chester pk. His occupation at that time was hairdresser.
In the 1894 Boston Almanac and Business Directory , he is listed on page 416 under Hairdressers, as being on 51 W. Brookline.
